Talisker

One of Scotch whisky’s most recognisable single malt brands, Talisker is located on the wind swept island of Skye. Founded in 1830 by two brothers, operations sadly did not last long and the site was sold in 1848 to the North of Scotland bank. After a number of mergers and acquisitions, the distillery merged in 1898 to create the Dailuaine-Talisker Distillers Company. This group would once again be purchased by a co-op including Johnnie Walker, John Dewar and most notably Distillers Company Limited, the entity that would become Diageo today. Up until 1928 Talisker had been a lightly peated triple distilled whisky, however in this year they abandoned the triple distillation in favour of a higher output double distillation. In 1925 DCL took full ownership of Talisker, with the distillery’s malts being a key component of its signature blended whiskies such as Johnnie Walker. A number of fires heavily affected production in Talisker’s history, but the most prominent was in 1960 when a stillhouse fire completely destroyed the distillery. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1962.

Talisker has been a pivotal producer for its parent company DCL/Diageo since acquiring it in 1925, with Talisker malt being a core pillar for many of its flagship blends. Most notably is Johnnie Walker green, a blended malt expression aged for 15 years and composed of Talisker, Linkwood, Caol Ila and Cragganmore. Talisker 10 year old single malt was included as one of the original Classic Malts during the series’ initial launch in 1988. More age stated expressions have appeared from the distillery into the early 2000s with the 25 and 30 year old releases hitting the market between 2004 and 2006. Always a feature in Diageo’s yearly special releases, recently Talisker has been presented as an ultra aged single malt. 2022 saw the introduction of a number of highly limited 40+ year old single malts from the distillery, including whisky finished in barrels made from staves seasoned by the ocean, as well as staves from shipwrecks. A coastal and classic style, Skye once had seven certified distilleries, but only Talisker has braved the environment and emerged as the island’s greatest distillery.
