A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 16 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey 2003 Release

A 2003 release of the enigmatic A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974. This is often heralded as the world's greatest ever bourbon, with Chuck Cowdery even publishing a dedicated book on the bottle in 2012 titled 'The Best Bourbon You'll Never Taste'. The story of the bottle is legendary, with the bourbon itself being produced in early 1974 at the original Michter’s Distillery near Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. Adolph Hirsch commissioned 400 barrels to be filled by Dick Stoll, the master distiller at the Michter's distillery. Utilising their pot stills, the order was fulfilled and laid down to age. When the distillery unfortunately faced bankrupty in the 1980s, the stocks were acquired by Gordon Hue, who then approached Julian Van Winkle the third to assist with the bottling efforts. A number of wax topped editions were released, with many being exclusive to the Japanese market, before yet again the stocks changed ownership and eventually led to this 2003 gold foil release. The Michter's pot still that created this exceptionally well rated bourbon is now on display at their Fort Nelson experience in Kentucky.
