Bruichladdich
One of Scotland’s most environmentally conscious distilleries, Bruichladdich is a leader in the whisky industry with investments in renewable energy sources and a strong focus on the quality of its casks and raw ingredients. Despite a number of closures and reopenings throughout its history, Bruichladdich has been one of the 21st century's most beloved producers amongst its revival. Notably, the distillery was mothballed in 1995 after Whyte & Mackay purchased Invergordon distillers. Production would run again in 1998 but it wasn't until 2000 when independent bottler Murray Mcdavid that Bruichladdich would once again return to full scale production. Mcdavid utilised the warehouses for both its independent bottling activities as well as the maturation of freshly distilled Bruichladdich casks.
Spirit would once again flow from the Laddie stills in 2001, including the development of Port Charlotte, a heavily peated expression that was a first for the distillery. In 2002 the boundaries would be pushed further and the first run of Octomore, the world’s most heavily peated whisky, would begin. After revitalising the brand, Murray Mcdavid would sell Bruichladdich to Remy Cointreau in 2012. It’s almost impossible to mention Bruichladdich without including the name of the legendary Jim Mcewan. After joining the revitalization efforts of Murray Mcdavid in 2001, Jim steered the ship for over 15 years at Bruichladdich, bringing a fresh idea on how important the quality of casks and barley are. Despite leaving in 2015, his impact is still seen today as the distillery utilises a wide number of high quality wine casks and places a strong emphasis on the provenance of its barley.
