Karuizawa 15 Year Old 100% Malt Whisky 1990s Bottling
Estimated to be a later 1990s edition of Karuizawa, this release is a 15 year old 'pure malt'. Unfortunately the demand for whisky across the world saw a huge downturn during the 1980's, resulting in the closure of many whisky distilleries throughout the world. Nikka and Suntory would whether this downturn with their beer production, but Ocean, or Mercian as they would later become, fell back to their wine production that was also unpopular. This meant that Kawasaki closed its doors in 1987 and Karuizawa would be cease production in 2000.

Karuizawa
The Sanroku-Ocean merger of 1962 brought together the Yamanshi and Karuizawa distilleries, only for the Yamanashi spirit to be deemed of awful quality. The Kawasaki grain facility would be commissioned shortly after and throughout the 1970's until the late 1980's Sanroku-Ocean utilised Kawasaki grain with Karuizawa malt to produce high quality blends, aimed to compete with the Scottish blends of the time. The company would soon become Mercian in 1990 and continue producing whisky until 2001 when Karuiazawa was closed.
The Karuizawa name has since been associated with some of the highest valued and most prized Japanese whiskies in history. A malt whisky production style that took inspiration from distilleries like Macallan and Springbank, the single malts produced by Karuizawa were often sherry matured and quality first focused. As the distillery closed in 2001, casks have slowly made their way to Europe with Number One Drinks in the UK acquiring the vast majority of casks. With both single casks and vattings ranging from 10-50 years in age, Karuizawa has become a distillery synonymous with high quality, luxury whisky.
